Hey mama!

Welcome sweet mama, to my online home where I invite you to view the stories of laboring mothers. My hope is that you will find these stories inspiring, and that you will walk away empowered, knowing that birth is not an experience to fear, but one to be enjoyed and remembered.

What's In My Bag? | Atlanta Birth Photographer Behind the Scenes

Happy Tuesday friends!

I don't know about you, but I love seeing what is in a photographer's camera bag. This is probably due to the fact that I'm somewhat of a gear junkie and I love knowing what other equipment people are using, why they're using it, and what they love about it. I also like to find out what items they're carrying that are somewhat of a "secret". For example, on a wedding day Rachel and I have what we call our "emergency kit" that has everything from a sewing kit to medicine, to hairspray, to extra wooden hangers for the bride and bridesmaid dresses. I knew that shooting births would require a similar bag of sorts since the length of time I'm at a birth varies so much and there's not always a good window of time to run to the cafeteria or go home to change clothes! This is where today's post comes in and I am so excited to share not only my equipment list with you, but the contents of my hospital/birth bag as well.

We'll start out with my overnight, birth bag. This bag is always being added to as I find new things I want/need with each birth.

The Birth Bag

  • Change of clothes

For me, this consists of a pair of comfy, loose, lounge pants and a t-shirt. If I get called in the middle of the day and it looks like we're going to be there all night, I want to make sure I'm not going to be stuck in whatever outfit I was wearing out that day. Who wants to be stuck in a dress or jeans all. night. long?

  • Light jacket or sweater

This is a personal preference that I learned from experience. Laboring mamas get hot, which means most delivery rooms are cold.

  • Toiletries

These are more for overnight situations as well. I always have a toothbrush, toothpaste, face wash, lotion, a comb/brush, and at least three hair ties in my bag. My favorite addition to my bag is dry shampoo. At my last birth, I left around 7:30 am and had a full day ahead of me with no convenient access to a shower so dry shampoo was immediately added!

  • Protein/power bars

Sometimes I don't have the option of running to the cafeteria or out to Chick-fil-A so I have to settle for a protein bar. KIND bars are my favorites (salted caramel and dark chocolate anyone?), but Luna bars were on sale this week so I'm trying them out this go around.

  • Water bottle

This is vacuumed-sealed, stainless steel water bottle that keeps drinks hot for up to 12 hours and cold for up to 24 hours. This comes in handy for staying hydrated and also for keeping my coffee hot at 2:30 am. :)

  • Neck pillow
  • Headphones
  • iPad
  • Cash/change

That's it for my personal bag, now onto my camera and equipment bag!

Camera Bag Essentials

  • Nikon D800 camera body
  • Nikon 35mm f/1.8 ED
  • Sigma Art Series 50mm f/1.4 for Nikon
  • Sigma 85mm f/1.4 for Nikon
  • 13" Macbook Pro
  • Lexar USB 3.0 Dual Slot Card Reader
  • Seagate 1TB portable, external hard drive
  • Think Tank Photo Pixel Pocket Rocket (CF memory card wallet)
  • Think Tank Photo Cable Management Bag
  • Black Rapid Camera Strap
  • Two Camera Batteries w/ Charger
  • Memory cards on memory cards on memory cards

All of this fits inside of my Fossil messenger bag that has a padded lens separator inside. You'll notice that there are no artificial lights or flashes included. This is a personal decision that I've made for my brand as it best suits the heart behind and style of my work. To make sure I'm still able to capture enough light for beautiful images, I educate my clients beforehand about how much light I'll need and always make sure to ask permission before turning on lights during labor and delivery.

I hope this peek inside my bag has been fun and informative, and I welcome any questions you may have about the items I've listed out! :)
